ROLLING STONE GIVES VENUS DOOM 3 STARS

Lovesick melodies on top of Sabbath riffs? Only in Finland

As doom merchants go, HIM are pretty easy to take. On their sixth album, the long-running Finnish quintet tops Black Sabbath riffs and grinding, tightly wound grooves with Ville Valo's lovesick crooning, all of which adds up to a dark sexy sound the band once dubbed "love metal." (Its logo is a pentagram mashed up with a heart.) Valo keeps his bleeding heart on his sleeve, yowling about dead lovers and dropping creepy poetry like the title track's gothed-out lament: "Watch me fall for you my Venus Doom/Hide my heart/Where all dreams are entombed." Thankfully, Valo also keeps it pretty songful, coming up with big, decently engaging tunes on cuts like the suavely sung "The Kiss Of Dawn" and "Bleed Well," which sports an eerie, catchy chorus that Quuens of the Stone Age would love to have written. The melodies tend toward the lush, while underneath, Valo's bandmates rock with fury and efficiency, ensuring that all the heartbroken laments are badass enough for hardcore metalheads. Not a bad trick. CHRISTIAN HOARD Rolling Stone

The review is out now in the October 2007 issue and online now.

it is all about the music

IF some day in the states they valorise and understand what this Finnish band do, i will get very sad and disappointed cause that means they went farther than dark light. (In a direct way went mainstream.) God, you people get upset with this kind of things? Like win stars or go gold here and there, why? Music that you like, that make you feel above and protected from the world doesn’t need to be catalogued by anyone and it´s obvious that they will never give them more than 3 stars because that the way it always was. For them it’s just one more band but the important thing here is that we know they work hard and with the soul and if the band and fans are pleased with the album, all worth it. They are in the right direction to return to the unique sound of love metal. I hope they never change their music to gain fans or status in the states because most of us like them like they always were heavy, melancholic, intelligent and with that beautiful cold of Finland.. E espero que com toda esta digressão não se esqueçam do pessoal aqui por Portugal.

p.s. Sorry but my English sucks ;)

What the hell?

They have nothing but good things to say about them but only give them three stars? What sense does that make?

4 stars at least!

It seems the american media still resists the idea of classic "old school" heavy rock and original lyrics. For me, it's great HIM is "not mainstream enough". Mainstream music this days is safe, dull, "all sound the same" kind of music. HIM really ROCKS!

no no no

HIM is one on the most original bands out there now adays. I think they deserve more than 3 fucking stars. They have only gotten better as a band over the years. Ville's songs may have gotten a bit gloomier but i think that is kind of a good thing. Don't let the critics and the assholes get you down. You guys are so much better than that. I love you guys and your music.

WHOA!!

I guess them hitting #1 on Billboard only 13 days after release date just goes to show you that even the journalistic 'masters' of Rollingstone can be mistaken!!! HAHAHAA!!! Way to go guys, you are THE BEST!!!

"HIM isn't mainstream enough" (which seems to be the biggest quote from radio stations lately) is just someone's sad attempt at showing their limited intelligence and attention span for quality music and lyrically expressive metal and the lack of sensitivity in the music industry these days. but hay that's just my personal opinion.

HIM ROCKS with HEART!!!

They only gave it 3 stars? Blaspheme! I think it deserves at least 4 stars. Shame, shame, Rolling Stone...

And woah, the article says it was posted October 18th. How'd they jump forward in time?!
